You Will Enjoy Tasting A Good Sonoma Wine!

Sonoma Valley is the birthplace of the
California wine industry.

Sonoma Valley is home to some of the earliest vineyards and wineries in the state, some of which survived the phylloxera epidemic of the 1870s and the impact of Prohibition. Its wineries are generally well prepared for receiving tourists. Today, this small valley's wines are protected by the US federal government's Sonoma Valley and Carneros appellations (or American Viticultural Areas).

Wine Country is a region of Northern California in the United States, known world-wide as a premium wine-growing region since 1838. There are some 200 wineries in the area north of San Francisco, mostly located in the area's valleys, including Napa Valley in Napa County, and the Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley in Sonoma County.

Some of Sonoma's major communities include Kenwood, Healdsburg, Sonoma, Santa Rosa (the setting for many major films including the , E. Hitchcock thriller Shadow of a Doubt), Napa, Calistoga (famous for its hot springs), Geyserville (famous for its... geysers), Bodega Bay (the setting for The Birds, another Hitchcock thriller), historic Fort Ross and Ukiah.

Winemaking - both the growing of the grapes and their vinting - is an important part of the economic and cultural life of Sonoma County. In 2004, growers harvested 165,783 short tons of wine grapes worth $310 million. About 80% of non-pasture agricultural land in the county is for growing wine grapes - 59,973 acres of vineyards, with over 1100 growers.

The most common varieties planted are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir, though the area is also known for its Merlot and Zinfandel.

Sonoma County is home to 191 wineries and 11 distinct (and 2 shared) American Viticultural Areas, including the Sonoma Valley, Russian River Valley, and Dry Creek Valley (the last famed for its production of high-quality Zinfandel).
